This week our class continued our Measurement Unit with learning about line plots! This is can easily become a difficult standard to learn but these 3rd graders worked hard to really understand the concept. Each day our 3rd graders are practing and reviewing a previously learned reading standard in preparation of the upcoming GA Milestones test. This week, we have reviewed Point of View, Main Idea & Text Features! Last week, students worked incredibly hard to write research papers for our social studies historical figures standard. Our class voted on two students to win the Writer of the Week Awards!!! Our winners were awarded a certificate, a Golden Horseshoe AND a special shoutout from our principal, Dr. Chaffee on Poole's afternoon announcements!!! Presley (our girl winner)Evan (our boy winner)In preparation of Poole's annual Around the World Night, 3rd grade students completed research on three different Historical Figures outlined in our 3rd grade social studies standard. Their research was rather extensive and their hard work was evident all week long!! We stayed after school every week to practice four different events.
I'm pleased to announce that Poole placed in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in three different events!! Our scientists were super excited when their classmates welcomed them back to school with a celebratory parade!! On March 14, 2017, I had the HONOR of being named The Dallas Rotary's February Teacher of the Month!!!! After being nominated by one of my incredibly caring and supportive classroom parents, I was awarded with a beautiful plague, award ceremony at the monthly PCSD Board Meeting and a delicious celebratory breakfast at a local restaurant!!! I have to thank our awesome principal, Dr. Chaffee, for not only attending both award events, but for constantly supporting and encouraging me to be the crazy, passionate 3rd grade teacher, I am! Students were given an activity sheet with two 'blank' beaches. Students were asked to add elements to each beach, to illustrate the difference between a litter free beach and a polluted beach. This school year, Poole has introduced county-wide learning management system called CANVAS. Students log in and are able to view modules, submit assignments, and submit assessments! Today our 3rd graders were conservationalists for our four lakes. CLEAN Lake WaterHarmful materials pollute our lakes.Observational ReportsOur principal, Dr. Chaffee, is "remodeling the tile outside of his office"! Mrs. West's 3rd graders were asked to help find area demensions for the new tile to be ordered! Shouts out to our awesome custodians for allowing the crazy 3rd grade teacher put tape all over the hallway! 😆 This week we spent our writing block planning, drafting & editing opinion/persuasive writing. After students wrote their rough drafts, they worked with partners to read and analyze their work! We used our small group time to preview our next math standard and get a head start on our area and perimeter unit!
This week, students combined our informational writing (W1-3) & habitats (L1) standards into one culminating project.
