Today 3rd grade started a new math standard! NBT.2 states that students will be able to fluently add and subtract within 1000 using grade level strategies. We are first focusing on ADDING within 1000 and using the DECOMPOSING method.
Today we introduced a word work activity called Word Castles. We had a whole group lesson learning each component of the activity and how to complete Word Castles on our own. These will be done during our school wide initiative; Daily 5.
For the last two weeks, our 3rd graders have worked incredibly hard on our Rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 standard! We have rounded on number lines, using rounding hills... we've even rounded mentally! Students have learned different ways to first, REMEMBER our rounding rules, then to APPLY the rounding rules to two and three digit numbers. Some of our photographed Rounding activities include:
Each day during our math segment of instruction, students learn and review each math standard during Math Workshop. This is a school wide initiative that involves a 3 part lesson: Opening, Work Time and Closing.
Students did an excellent job reviewing the elements of Math Workshop with a diagram in their Math Interactive Notebooks. SS3H1 The student will explain the political roots of our modern democracy in the United States of America. a. Identify the influence of Greek architecture (columns on the Parthenon, U. S. Supreme Court building), law, and the Olympic Games on the present. Students completed a number of activities related to Ancient Greece in their SCI/SS interactive notebooks.
Our first 3rd grade extended text is Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Dicamillo. We are about half way through the novel and the students seem to really enjoy the tale of Opal and her dog. We have applied four 3rd grade reading standards to our extended text.
These standards include:
This week we have officially started our school wide math initiative; Number Talks. Each morning after announcements, students all over Poole will be actively engaged in mental math strategies and discussions.
While our 3rd graders have been exposed to Number Talks for two years, we reviewed the expectations and discussed how Number Talks would change in 3rd grade. Today, students reviewed an ELA standard they learned in 2nd grade. We reviewed action verbs, as we will use these verbs in our writings and as we read this year.
When students have trouble identifying an action verb, they ask themselves "Can you show me how to do it?" Today we introduced 3rd Grade Flash Drafts. These writings will be the first steps in our Writing Cycle. We learned that a draft has to be edited (sometimes multiple times) before it can be perfected. My 3rd graders did a PHENOMENAL job implementing the Flash Draft process. Based on their red-pen edits and writing non-negotiables checklists, it was obvious that the students took pride in their writing.
