I can not believe the amount of effort students put into our end of unit summary for Because of Winn-Dixie!! Students had to include character illustrations, the setting & main ideas with details.

Continuing our Heat unit, we learned that a conductor is an object that heat moves through easily and insulator is an object that heat DOES NOT move through easily. Today we celebrated our nation's constitution and learned more about this month's character education word; Patriotism! Instead of a traditional written summarization, students summarized multiple chapters of Because of Winn-Dixie using Sketch Noting. Sketch noting is an awesome and (surprisingly accurate) way of assessing students' comprehension of a text! Today students took a math diagnostic assessment... ONLINE.
Students were more comfortable in a less stressful environment that unfortunately comes with taking a paper/pencil test. At the beginning of our Because of Winn-Dixie reading unit students responded to a question about Opal's dad, the Preacher. Our class is an official BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) classroom. We have incorporated technology into our math and reading NBI segments. Today we explored the online formative assessment app, Kahoot!
Instead of our traditional dry erase board practice, each small group answered rounding word problems online. Students took pride in this NBI practice because they rounded numbers to the nearest 10 and 100, without drawing number lines on paper!! One of our 3rd grade reading standards states that students will refer to details from a text. We chose to reference details using different colered crayons!! Not only did the coloring keep students accountable, this helped students successfully master the standard!! Last week we continued our Heat unit. We continued learning about our four sources of heat. Our first heat source was friction. Next, we observed electricity as a heat source. Students watched Mrs. W apply an electric heat source to "hot" (red) M&Ms while allowing (blue) M&Ms to remain "cold". Today we began our three week Heat unit! We learned a little bit about friction and performed an observation experiment! We ended our reading unit study of The Big Friendly Giant by creating our OWN Trogglehumper and Fizzwizzard dreams!! We used a chemical reaction to make the bad dreams, and this served as the perfect introduction to our Heat unit in science!!! Students had the opportunity to measure temperature and observe how the change took place! During our Reading NBI time, students are reading books, stories and passages on their specific LEXILE level AND with a specific focus. Today I captured a couple of kiddoes reading their fluency passages & their focus was vocabulary! Our Democracy Roles assignment was incredibly rewarding! Each student was randomly assigned the role of a citizen from Ancient Rome:
Students LOVED our Rounding Cake Walk!! As the music played students walked around a circle of Rounded benchmark numbers. When the music stopped, students had to sit behind the benchmark number they landed on.
Each round, Mrs. West called out a three digit number. Whoever landed on the number's rounded benchmark won the point for that round! Each week, GREEN Graded Paper Folders will be sent home with students. Please sign your name on all papers graded with a "1". This is the best way to communicate that you have seen ALL grades for the week. |
